Water Abstraction Registration
What is this licence?
You must register if you will abstract 25 cubic meters of water or more per day. Although it's not a licence, failure to register can incur a fine.
When do I need it?
You'll need to register if you're abstracting water to:
- Feed an industrial process
- Dewater a groundwater body to facilitate a deep excavation during construction.
How to apply
Registration is free and can only be done online. Register your abstraction by following these steps:
1. Sign up to EDEN
Sign up to the EPA's EDEN website and request access to the Water Abstractions Module. Guidance on this process is available on the EPA website.
2. Submit abstraction details
Submit your abstraction details in the Water Abstractions Module via the EDEN website.
What you need to include
With your application, you'll need to include the following details:
- The abstraction owner's name and address
- Abstraction location details, such as the address and Eircode
- Abstraction source details (a river, lake or spring)
- Abstraction purpose details (e.g. industrial, agricultural, or commercial)
- The number of abstraction points
You'll need to give details of the highest amount of water you would abstract in one day (measured in m3/d). Typically, the highest volume of water is on a dry summer's day. You can give an estimated value if you do not have an exact figure.
You'll also need to give the average amount of water you would use from the abstraction over a year (measured in cubic meters per year). You can give an estimated value if you do not have an exact figure.
3. Receive confirmation
When your registration is complete, you'll receive a confirmation email from the EPA.
