What is this licence?

All bat species found in Ireland are protected under Annex IV of the EC (Birds and Natural Habitats) Regulations 2011 – 2021. A derogation licence allows activities which could impact the conservation of bats. It is only issued in very limited circumstances.

When do I need it?

A derogation licence is needed before any works which would:

  • Capture or kill bats
  • Damage or destroy their roosts
  • Disturb them at important parts of their life cycle

To apply

You can apply by submitting an application form. Once completed sent it by email to wildlifelicence@npws.gov.ie or post to the address on the form.

All applications must be accompanied by a detailed, up-to-date ecologist’s report covering all information in the form.
