Small Scale Grid Connection Offer
What is this licence?
A Small Scale Grid Connection Offer connects electricity generators up to 200kVA. It's used when an electricity customer installs generation at a demand premises to produce electricity under 200kVA. It includes synchronous generation (e.g. CHP) and inverter-connected generation (e.g. PV).
These generators are generally installed to locally produce clean electricity for self-consumption. This reduces the need and cost of purchasing electricity. It also helps to tackle climate change, rising electricity prices and reliance on fossil fuels.
When do I need it?
You'll need this to connect to the electricity grid. Small Scale Generation is designed to operate in parallel with the electricity network.
How to apply
Inverter-connected generators
Inverter-connected generator applications in this range can be made by submitting an NC8 form to ESB Networks.
Synchronous generators
For synchronous generator connections above the level covered under Micro-Generation and up to 200kVA, use the NC5 form.
Documents to include with your application
Email the completed form and the associated documents below to [email protected]. Or post them to:

Block Diagram (or Single Line Diagram)
This is required to clarify the final configuration of the generation system proposed. It should show the final outline of the system and any existing generation (including micro-generation/mini-generation). It should include:
- Each inverter
- The generation behind the inverter
- Any inverter-connected storage devices
Manufacturer’s Type Test Certificates
This gives details of the rating of the equipment and the Harmonics produced in amps up to 50th Harmonic. It also details the distributing load characteristics and short circuit characteristics. i.e. the minimum information required to configure a safe and optimal system.
See page 8 of this document:
Manufacturer’s Export Limiting Scheme (ELS)
See a template Product Declaration Form for ESB Networks (if applicable) below.
Letter of Authority (if applicable)
A Letter of Authority is signed by the owner of the MPRN. It authorises a third-party to act on their behalf on all matters relating to the application for connection of Small Scale Generation.
Fees
Once your application is deemed complete, you will receive an email with the invoice number and payment options. The current, non-refundable application fee is €1,223.85 (including VAT@23%). A corresponding VAT invoice for the application fee will issue within 10 business days. See ESB for more on how to pay the invoice.
