What is this licence?
A Licence to Generate allows a person to generate electricity. You may need this licence during the pre-construction phase of your project.
How to apply
Pre-application meetings
A pre-submission meeting for new applicants or applicants with novel or complex applications is recommended. This helps to avoid a potential invalid application.
At this meeting, the CRU will set out the application and assessment process. They will also answer your questions after you have reviewed the guidance notes and application forms.

Application forms
You can obtain an application form from the CRU website using the links below. If you are applying for both a Licence and Authorisation at the same time, use a Dual Application Form.
- Notification for Generators Not Exceeding 10 MW
- Application for a Licence to Generate Electricity < 40 MW
- Application for a Licence to Generate electricity > 40 MW
- Dual Application for Authorisation and Licence < 40 MW
- Dual Application for Authorisation and Licence > 40 MW
Your application must include your application form, fee, financial information, RESS offer (for RESS projects only), planning information, connection agreement and technical information.
Fees
The following fees apply for a Licence to Generate, based on the installed capacity of generating gtation
- 1 MW to <5 MW - €35
- 5 MW to <15 MW - €55
- 15 MW to 40MW - €100
- >40 MW to <50 MW - €200
- 50 MW to <100 MW - €400
- 100 MW to <200 MW - €1,330
- 200 MW to <500 MW - €3,320
- 500 MW and greater - €3,980
What if my application is rejected?
If the CRU decides to refuse a Licence application, you will be notified in writing. This letter will explain the reasons for the refusal and detail the appeals process.
