Geothermal Energy Utilisation Lease (GEUL)
What is this licence?
Following the exploration stage, a Geothermal Energy Utilisation Lease (GEUL) will be required before the geothermal resource can be used.
You can apply for a GEUL during the term of a Geothermal Energy Exploration Licence (GEEL). This applies if a geothermal resource is viable for energy production.
How to apply
The regulatory framework for geothermal energy systems is at the detailed design stage, including the development of the necessary legislation. The policy statement, as published in July 2023, sets out the approach to be taken to regulation.
In the interim, users interested in the regulatory regime can contact Geoscience Policy Division in DECC at [email protected] for updates.
