Dumping at Sea Permit
What is this licence?
A dumping at sea permit is required to deliberately dispose a substance / material in the maritime area, from or in conjunction with a:
- Vessel
- Aircraft
- Offshore installation
This includes side-cast dredging, plough dredging, water injection dredging and other such dredging techniques.
Consideration for a dumping at sea permit is limited to either:
- Dredged material
- Inert materials of natural origin - that is solid, chemically unprocessed geological material the chemical constituents of which are unlikely to be released into the marine environment or disused offshore installations
When do I need it?
Anyone who wishes to dispose of material at sea is required to apply for a Dumping at Sea permit. It's best to apply for the permit during the pre-construction phase. This allows for sand-wave levelling to be undertaken if needed. All applicants should familiarise themselves with guidance documentation before applying.
How to apply
All applicants are advised to familiarise themselves with relevant guidance documentation before submitting a completed application and a Material Analysis Reporting Form.
The Dumping at Sea permit process consists of number of stages, including a public participation period. Anybody can make a submission on a Dumping at Sea permit application received by the EPA.
