Detection Device Consent
What is this licence?
This licence is required to protect Ireland’s national monuments. It determines how a detection device can be used around specified places and monuments.
A detection device is defined as 'a device designed or adapted for locating any metal or mineral on or in the ground, on, in or under the seabed or on or in land covered by water but does not include a camera'.
When do I need it?
Under Section 2 of the National Monuments Act 1987 (as amended), consent must be obtained to:
- Use a detection device to search for archaeological objects at a specified place
- Use and possess a detection device at a place protected under the National Monuments Acts
An Excavation Licence will likely be accompanied by an Excavation Risk Assessment process. Construction regulations require contractors to guard against dangers from a fall or dislodgement of material in an excavation.
The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 requires a risk assessment to be performed by contractors before undertaking excavation work.
